ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) Information:
On December 10, 2015, President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law, which included school libraries in a number of the provisions. ESSA replaces the No Child Left Behind version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act with language that ensures “effective school libraries” are addressed in state and local plans.

Our Role as School Librarians and ESSA:
The language within ESSA repeatedly mentions “effective school library programs”. We need to lead the conversation about what effective school library programs look like and, where necessary, advocate for the resources needed to develop and enhance existing school library programs to ensure their effectiveness.
