About Us

OELMA was created in 1976, when the Ohio Association of School Librarians and the Educational Media Council of Ohio joined together.  It quickly became and remains the premier Ohio organization for school library media personnel. Members include pre-K-12 teachers and library media specialists, educational aides, college students, university professors, technology specialists, vendors, authors and literary specialists throughout Ohio and other states.

The organization is governed by a President, Past-president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and a board representing various geographical areas of Ohio. Additionally, we employ a Director of Services, from Accent On Management, at the OELMA office in Columbus.

All dues paying members are voting members, who receive updates via email, newsletter and the yearly magazine.  All members are eligible to serve in any capacity of service.

The following summarizes our purpose for the past year and several years to come.

Mission Statement

Advocate for school librarians as they educate students for success.

Vision Statement

The Ohio Educational Library Media Association is Ohio’s preeminent professional association for highly effective school librarians and libraries.

Value Statement

  • Commit to educational excellence and academic achievement.
  • Serve the needs of 21st Century learners and workers in a global society.
  • Respect and promote diverse people and ideas.

Strategic Planning

The OELMA Board met with CAE consultant, Bob Harris, on May 9 and 10, 2008 for the purpose of establishing a strategic plan for the organization. We established a mission statement, vision staement, value statements and action steps for OELMA.

OELMA is currently engaged in ongoing work in order to accomplish the goals of the planning session. The links below outline the Strategic Plan itself, and the continually evolving Action Plan.

The five external and internal goals:

  1. Membership Growth, Benefits and Services
  2. Professional Development and Resources for Librarians
  3. Advocacy and Government Relations
  4. Public Relations and Communications
  5. Association Excellence

Any member who wishes to be a part of the Action Plan is welcome. Contact the office for more information.
