2011-2012 OELMA Central Region Workshops
Keeping Your Skills Sharp!
Your Central Region Co-Chairs, Susan Fitzpatrick and Laura
Piazza, are pleased to announce the roster of workshops for
the 2011-2012 school year. We think you’ll find them to
include exceptional professional development – and, of
course, it’s always good to hang out with your colleagues!
All sessions take place at Upper Arlington High School from
4:30 – 6:30 pm unless otherwise indicated. Graduate credit
will be available should you elect to participate for
credit, but all attendees will receive a certificate of
attendance. Each session cost $20, but you can sign up for
all sessions for a flat rate of $80. That’s like
getting one session free!
October 6, 2011 – Beefing up Your PLN
Location: UA High School Learning Center Classroom
Presenter: Laura
Piazza
$20
This session offers attendees a chance to learn about a
number of electronic ways to keep up with the flood of
information about our profession. Because it’s so important
to stay “on top” of the news of the day, we’ll take a look
at aggregators, Twitter, social bookmarking, and other ways
to be connected with the voices of our peers. Time will be
allowed for attendees to practice with a computer.
November 10, 2011 – Do You Still
Google Like a Sixth Grader?
Location: UA High School Learning Center Classroom
Presenter: Kathy
Orr
$20
Do you wonder why students cling to their search habits they
learned as elementary students in spite of your efforts to
raise the bar on search? Do you have students say they
can't find anything on Google? Or find only things of low
quality? This workshop presents ideas for lessons that will
meet state standards that you can implement at the high
school level to assure that your students are ready for
college when they graduate. We will also address what
middle and elementary librarians can do to lay the
groundwork for academic search strategies. Clear targets and
assessments will be included that you can adapt to your
students and teachers needs.
December 1, 2011 – What is a Learning
Commons?
Location: UA High School Learning Center
Classroom
Presenter: Gayle Geitgey
$20
Wondering about how to start a Learning Commons for your
school library? Join us for an informative session on the
benefits of creating a Learning Commons, a collaborative
space for staff and students to share their learning. We
will visit the INFOhio 21st Century Learning Commons and
learn how to use this tool for staff professional
development and as a professional learning network.

Drive, The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us
by Daniel Pink
In a culture full of promises that if you “buy this” or “eat
this” or “work here” you’ll be happy, did you ever wonder
what it takes to really motivate us to success and
happiness? Join us for a discussion of Daniel Pink’s
thoughtful assessment of what inspires us to work smarter
and live better. Those participants who are taking the
workshop series for graduate credit will be the presenters
for this session. There will be time for all attendees to
join the conversation.
March 8, 2012 – Kindles and Kobos and
Nooks, OH MY!
Location: UA High School Learning Center Classroom
Presenters: Jennifer Hrusch, Robin
Nesbitt
$20
If there is one thing we have learned about digital content,
including eBooks, it is that the marketplace is fast moving
and ever changing. Join Robin Nesbitt and Jennifer Hrusch,
from Columbus Metropolitan Library, the LJ 2010 Library of
the Year, for this fun and informative presentation about
devices, digital content and that tricky little component
called digital rights management. Then, let’s take a look
forward and see what we might find waiting on the digital
horizon. Bring your own eReader if you’d like – there will
be time for questions.
*Bonus: One colleague or administrator can attend this
session for free with a paying SLMS. Please RSVP to Laura
Piazza (lpiazza@uaschools.org)
or Susan Fitzpatrick (ssnfitz@aol.com)
so we have enough space/handouts.

April 19, 2012 TRAILS – Assessing
Information Literacy Skills
Location: UA High School Learning Center Classroom
Presenter: The TRAILS team, via
Skype $20
TRAILS has grown and, now in its 6th year, offers
assessments for 3rd, 6th, 9th,
and 12th grades. This Skype session will cover
how to take full advantage of the data that TRAILS can
provide, including use of the national benchmarks, plus
reports from others on their use of the tool. We’ll spend
some time talking among ourselves to find ways to use TRAILS
data to inspire students and guide our fellow faculty
members towards educating our students in the very critical
thinking skills so necessary to navigate the classroom and
the world.
